Apple Mac revenue hits $8.4B as local AI workloads catch the company off guard

Apple posted $8.4 billion in Mac revenue for the quarter ended March 28, ahead of the low-$8 billion figure Wall Street had penciled in, after demand for running local AI models on Mac hardware ran past the company's own forecasts. Mac sales grew 6% year-over-year against analyst expectations of essentially flat growth. Total company revenue came in at $111.2 billion, up 17% from the year-ago quarter.

The Mac line is not usually the headline at an Apple earnings call — iPhone and Services typically take that slot — but this quarter the desktop and laptop business quietly outperformed. CEO Tim Cook told analysts on Thursday that the Mac mini and Mac Studio sold out in recent weeks as buyers picked them up specifically to run on-device AI workloads, including the open model OpenClaw.

"Both of these are amazing platforms for AI and agentic tools, and the customer recognition of that is happening faster than what we had predicted, and so we saw higher than expected demand," Cook said. He added that the Mac mini was the top-selling desktop in China, a market currently in what he described as an OpenClaw frenzy.

Key facts

  • 01Apple Mac revenue reached $8.4B in Q2, beating Wall Street's low-$8B expectation.
  • 02Mac sales grew 6% year-over-year; analysts had modeled flat growth.
  • 03Total Apple revenue was $111.2B, up 17% from the same quarter last year.
  • 04Tim Cook said it will take several months to reach supply-demand balance on Mac mini and Mac Studio.
  • 05MacBook Neo preorders opened March 4, with most units shipping mid- to late March.

Some of the upside also came from the new MacBook Neo, the colorful consumer laptop whose preorders opened March 4. Most units shipped mid- to late March, giving the product only a few weeks of revenue contribution in the quarter, and certain configurations sold out, pushing some demand into April. Cook said customer demand for the Neo was "off the charts and higher than Apple had expected," and that Apple set a quarterly record for customers new to the Mac.

The supply picture is the awkward part. Mac revenue was flat quarter-over-quarter, suggesting Apple has not yet been able to convert the AI-driven interest into shipped units at scale. Cook said it may take "several months to reach supply-demand balance on the Mac mini and Studio models," and that the MacBook Neo is also supply constrained.

"We're not at the point where we're saying this [constraint] is going to end anytime soon. And it's not because of a problem, per se, other than we just under-called the demand," Cook said on the call. That is an unusually candid admission from a company that built its reputation on supply chain precision.

Enterprise buyers are part of the mix. Cook pointed to Perplexity as one of several larger companies standardizing on Mac as the preferred platform for building enterprise AI assistants. The pitch is straightforward: unified memory architecture and Apple silicon make it cheap, in power and dollars, to run sizeable models locally on a developer's desk rather than burning cloud inference credits.

Education is showing up too. Cook said school systems including Kansas City Public Schools have moved off Chromebooks in favor of the MacBook Neo. That is a category Google has dominated in K-12 for more than a decade, and any meaningful share shift toward Apple at that price point would be notable.

The caveat worth flagging: a 6% Mac growth quarter, even on a beat, is not the kind of curve that reshapes Apple's overall business mix in the near term. Mac is still a fraction of total revenue dominated by iPhone and Services, and a single quarter of AI-driven demand needs to repeat through the back half of 2026 before it counts as a trend. The supply constraint Cook described also means Apple is, by his own account, leaving revenue on the table right now.

What the quarter does suggest is that on-device AI inference is becoming a real reason to buy hardware, and Apple silicon is the accidental beneficiary. NVIDIA still owns the training and high-end inference market — see the recent NemoClaw push around autonomous agents — but the long tail of developers, students and enterprises who want to run a 70B-parameter model on their own machine without paying per token are increasingly choosing a Mac mini or Studio. If that pattern holds through the next two quarters, Apple's most boring product line becomes one of the more interesting ones to watch.
