OpenAI acquires Hiro, a consumer finance AI startup

A second 2026 acquisition — OpenAI is moving from model provider to vertical operator.

OpenAI has acquired Hiro, a consumer finance startup offering an AI money coach powered by GPT-4o, for an undisclosed amount estimated in the low hundreds of millions. This is OpenAI's second acquisition this year, following its purchase of the media startup TBPN, and signals a deliberate shift toward vertical integration and end-user product businesses.

Hiro launched in 2024 with a conversational finance advisor that answers questions about budgeting, investment options, and tax planning. The product had attracted approximately 150,000 active users and $2.4 million in monthly recurring revenue before the acquisition. Hiro's founding team includes former executives from Betterment and Robinhood, lending credibility to the fintech focus.

The deal is about talent and a proven product surface more than the current revenue. OpenAI is effectively acquiring Hiro's product team and user base to build a dedicated fintech vertical within the OpenAI ecosystem. The company has not announced plans to sunset Hiro standalone or merge it into ChatGPT, but internal conversations suggest integration into a wider "AI assistant for money" product that spans both consumer and small-business use cases.

  • 03Fintech. A key thread of reporting in this story.

This mirrors OpenAI's strategy with TBPN, where the acquisition brought a media operations team and publishing infrastructure into OpenAI's orbit. Both deals follow the same pattern: OpenAI builds a generalist AI model, then acquires product teams and user bases to verticalize. The model is the engine, but the product experience and customer relationships are the moat.

The pace of acquisitions is notable for a 7-year-old AI company still primarily known as a model provider. Two major acquisitions in 120 days suggests OpenAI's leadership believes models alone are becoming commoditized and that owning end-to-end product experiences in high-margin verticals is the future. This is a fundamental strategic shift away from pure-play foundation models.
