OpenAI has acquired NextSlide, an AI startup that turns prompts, notes, and documents into editable presentations, and folded its team into ChatGPT. OpenAI has not disclosed which surface of ChatGPT will absorb the slide-generation work, but the natural fit is inside the ChatGPT product itself, where users already paste documents and research and ask for structured outputs. A native slide-builder inside ChatGPT would put OpenAI directly against Microsoft PowerPoint Copilot, Google Slides with Gemini, Canva, Gamma, Tome, and Beautiful.ai — a crowded field where AI-generated decks have become table-stakes rather than a differentiator.

The pace of these tuck-ins matters for competitors trying to build standalone AI productivity tools. Every category OpenAI absorbs directly — slides, spreadsheets, coding assistants, browsers, search — is one where the independent startup thesis narrows. Buyers evaluating AI slide tools now have to weigh whether ChatGPT itself will ship a first-party version within months.
The deal terms remain opaque, and without a price it is hard to judge how OpenAI values these vertical AI teams. NextSlide had not disclosed user or revenue figures, and the Caper AI-to-Instacart precedent suggests Beshry's track record likely commanded a meaningful premium on top of any product value. That said, small acqui-hires in the AI productivity space have generally cleared in the low tens to low hundreds of millions, and there is no indication NextSlide broke that band.
For OpenAI, the strategic logic is straightforward. ChatGPT's paying user base already treats the product as a general-purpose work surface, and slides are one of the highest-frequency artifacts knowledge workers produce. Bringing in a team that has already solved the prompt-to-deck pipeline shortens the roadmap by quarters, and it removes a category where a well-funded independent could otherwise have built a durable brand. Expect the feature to surface inside ChatGPT rather than as a separate app — and expect the standalone AI-slides category to compress meaningfully once it does.
