OpenAI is bringing its frontier models and Codex agentic workflows to Google Cloud, the company announced Wednesday, putting OpenAI models inside Google Cloud's Model Garden alongside Google's own Gemini lineup. General availability is planned "in the coming weeks," and interested customers can request access through a form on OpenAI's site.

Google Cloud customers will buy the models through Google Cloud Marketplace and can apply existing Google Cloud spend commitments to those purchases. According to Google Cloud, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are rolling out first in private preview to select enterprise customers, with more to follow.

Google Cloud positions Astra for demanding work across coding, computer use, professional tasks and scientific research, Sol as near-Astra intelligence at a lower cost, and Luna as the fast, cost-efficient option for everyday work at scale. Customers can switch between models without architectural lock-in or separate vendor contracts, the company said.

Key facts

  • 01OpenAI announced on October 21, 2026 that its frontier models and Codex are coming to Google Cloud's Model Garden.
  • 02GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are rolling out in private preview to select enterprise customers, per Google Cloud.
  • 03Customers buy through Google Cloud Marketplace and can apply existing Google Cloud spend commitments.
  • 04General availability is planned in the coming weeks; OpenAI says Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner.
  • 05Google Cloud says it now offers all three leading closed-source LLMs among 200+ models on its platform.

Codex is part of the package. Starting October 21, developers can connect local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows to Google's platform for inference, and OpenAI said its models will soon be available in Google Antigravity, Google's development environment, and in the Gemini Agent.

“Google Cloud is a leading platform for developers and businesses building AI agents”
— Greg Brockman, President and co-founder of OpenAI

OpenAI is pitching the integration at enterprises in regulated industries, pairing its models with Google Cloud's access controls, centralized data governance and infrastructure. Google Cloud said prompts, context and outputs stay within the customer's designated data perimeter and are not used to train foundation models, with Zero Data Retention options and Confidential Compute listed as coming soon.

Billing runs through a single Google Cloud invoice, and OpenAI usage counts toward Flexible Savings Plans that span model providers, according to Google Cloud. The company said it is now the only hyperscale cloud offering all three leading closed-source LLMs, out of more than 200 first-party, third-party and open models on its platform.

The agreement extends OpenAI's reach to customers of all three major US cloud providers. It follows OpenAI's expansion onto Amazon Web Services earlier in 2026, which came after changes to OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft, and Amazon has since expanded OpenAI models and services on its Bedrock platform.

“focused on giving customers a broad selection of models, including those from OpenAI”
— Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud

OpenAI said Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner. Neither OpenAI nor Google Cloud disclosed financial terms for the deal.

For Google, the arrangement means selling a rival's models next to Gemini inside its own cloud. Mike Leone, a vice president and analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, said "Gemini now has to win those customers with OpenAI sitting right next to it," while noting that customers still pay Google for cloud, data and security services either way.

Until general availability, customers can register interest through access forms posted by both OpenAI and Google Cloud.
