The chip supports 4.4K resolution at 90 frames per second per eye, extends battery life by up to 20%, and runs up to 12 degrees Celsius cooler than its predecessor under heavy workloads. The first device shipping with it will be Xreal's Project Aura glasses for Android XR, arriving this fall.
The unveiling took place at Augmented World Expo on June 16, but the chip already had a quiet public debut. The Aura glasses that Xreal and Google demoed at Google I/O last month were running Reality Elite silicon, though neither company named the processor at the time. Qualcomm filled in the blank today.
The performance gains map directly to what has been holding the smart glasses category back. Display glasses need more compute to run useful on-device AI features, but every extra watt has translated into either a bulkier frame, shorter runtime, or a hot spot pressed against the wearer's temple. A 160% NPU jump paired with a 12°C cooling improvement is Qualcomm's attempt to break that trilemma.

Both chips put NPU gains front and center, a signal of where Qualcomm's partners are pushing.
Those partners include Meta and Google, the two companies most aggressively trying to make AI-native eyewear a mainstream category. Qualcomm builds to spec, so the silicon roadmap is a leading indicator of what Meta's Ray-Ban successor lineup and Google's Android XR partners are planning to ship in late 2026 and 2027. The 4.4K-per-eye resolution target in particular suggests vendors are betting on display glasses, not just audio-and-camera frames.
Project Aura is the test case. Xreal has been building tethered display glasses for years, but Aura is its first device built around Android XR, Google's operating system for the category. Putting Reality Elite inside it gives Google a flagship pair of Android XR glasses with enough headroom to run multimodal Gemini features locally without throttling.
The cooling claim is the spec worth watching. Smart glasses with displays have repeatedly run into thermal limits when developers try to keep an LLM warm in memory or run continuous computer vision. A 12°C reduction at peak load, if it holds up outside Qualcomm's reference designs, would unlock features that today's hardware has to gate or offload to a phone.
Battery life is the other gating factor. A 20% improvement is meaningful but not transformative — most current display glasses are still measured in hours, not days. Pairing that with the cooling gain and a more efficient NPU is how Qualcomm is trying to get vendors past the all-day-wear threshold without making the frames heavier.
Skeptics will note that chip specs and shipping products are different things. Qualcomm's reference benchmarks rarely survive contact with the design constraints of a sub-50-gram frame, and the smart glasses category has a long history of impressive component announcements that arrive in devices nobody buys. Reality Elite will be judged on what Aura, and the Meta and Google products that follow it, actually deliver in the hand and on the face.
The strategic read is that Qualcomm is positioning itself as the default silicon vendor for the AI wearables wave the way it became the default for Android phones. With Reality Elite for display glasses and Wear Elite for audio frames and watches, the company now has a two-chip stack covering the bulk of where Meta, Google, Xreal, and their downstream partners are placing 2027 bets. If smart glasses finally become the AI form factor the industry has been promising, Qualcomm has booked the seat at the table — and the Aura launch this fall is the first test of whether the silicon is actually ready for it.
