Clawdmeter, an open source desk gadget that displays Claude Code token usage as a dancing pixel-art sprite, has pulled 800 GitHub stars and 50 forks since its May 10 launch. The project, built by Reykjavik-based developer Hermann Haraldsson, turns Anthropic's coding agent into a physical dashboard with animations that get busier as your usage rate climbs. It is both a hobbyist toy and a marker of how deeply Claude Code has lodged itself in developer workflows.
The hardware is deliberately modest. Clawdmeter runs on a Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-AMOLED-2.16, a small lithium-ion battery-powered display that pairs with a laptop over Bluetooth. The device reads a user's Claude Code OAuth token, makes an API call, and pulls usage numbers from the response headers — no separate service, no scraping.
The interface is built around one middle button and two side buttons. Pressing the middle button cycles from the Clawd splash animation to session and weekly usage charts, then to a Bluetooth status and reset screen. The two side buttons send Space and Shift+Tab over Bluetooth, mapping to Claude Code's voice mode and the toggle that rotates between Normal mode, Accept Edits mode, Plan Mode, and Auto Mode.

Haraldsson told TechCrunch he is not an embedded developer and had long wanted to try a hardware project. Claude walked him through the build in a few days, with most of his own time spent on the font, colors, and animation polish. "It's really democratized access to programming, so that anyone can now do what developers used to do. I think that's really positive, actually," he said.

The project lands in the middle of a developer subculture its fans call tokenmaxxing — software engineers at various companies treating the volume of AI tokens they consume at work as a proxy for how thoroughly they have adopted AI. Clawdmeter feeds that loop directly. "I like it when I'm working, and I see it going crazy — it's like a little dopamine loop," Haraldsson said.
The reception on social channels has matched the framing. One Reddit user wrote, "At this point, Anthropic should just mail these to us for free." Another called it a "hardware Tamagotchi for my context window." A separate suggestion — adding a button to top up more tokens directly from a card on file — captured both the joke and the underlying economics of metered AI coding.
Haraldsson links the appeal to nostalgia for single-purpose gadgets. "There's a kind of nostalgia for when you used to have a hardware device for everything — like a Walkman to play music, or an iPod," he said. "I know it's not replacing anything — like, you could have this on your computer — but it's just fun." Because Clawdmeter is open source, the 50 forks already point at custom animations, alternate screens, and personal feature additions.
There is a thinner read here too. A desk meter is only useful if Claude Code usage is sustained enough to be worth glancing at, and 800 stars in four days for what amounts to a context-window status light suggests a population of developers running the agent constantly enough that pacing it has become a felt problem. Anthropic does not break out Claude Code seats, and Clawdmeter is anecdotal, not a metric — but it is the kind of anecdote that tends to precede a product line.
For Anthropic, the read-through is that Claude Code has crossed into the territory where users build accessories for it. That is the same cultural pattern that surrounded earlier developer tools that became defaults, and it is a cheaper signal of stickiness than any usage chart the company could publish. The market question now is whether OpenAI's Codex-branded tools and Google's Gemini coding agents inspire the same kind of unsolicited hardware — and whether Anthropic chooses to lean into the meme with first-party merchandise, or leave the ecosystem to ship its own.
