Google AI Studio launched native Android app creation Tuesday, shrinking a process that takes weeks of setup and coding down to minutes with Gemini-powered natural language prompts. The web-based tool builds apps in Kotlin using Google Jetpack Compose and supports hardware sensors including GPS, Bluetooth, and NFC. Apps preview directly in an embedded Android Emulator inside the browser.
The move escalates competition with Cursor, Replit, Lovable, and Claude Code, while opening Android development to non-technical creators. Google positions the tool for both seasoned developers prototyping quickly and first-time creators building personal utilities, simple social apps, or hardware-enabled experiences.

Apps are currently for personal use only. Publishing for family and friends remains on the roadmap. Developers can install apps on their Android phone via USB using the integrated Android Debug Bridge, or upload to an internal testing track in Google Play Console for iteration. Exporting to Android Studio is available by downloading a zip file and pushing directly to GitHub.

The announcement came Tuesday at the start of Google I/O, the company's annual developer conference. Google held back the app-builder news from last week's Android preview, signaling its weight as a centerpiece of this year's AI-everywhere theme across workspace productivity, search, and mobile.
The roadmap includes publishing for family and friends, Firebase tooling, and tighter integration with Google Play Console. The underlying model is Gemini, which Google has embedded across its product stack this year.
The constraint remains publishing. For now, creators can build and test but not distribute beyond personal devices or internal testing tracks. That limit keeps the tool in prototype territory for most serious developers.
The larger bet is discovery. By surfacing apps in Gemini conversations, Google is routing millions of queries into Android app installs without requiring Play Store search. That's a structural shift in how apps reach users, tilting away from search optimization and toward conversational relevance. If Gemini becomes the default interface for app discovery, the economics of Android development change.
