Google on Tuesday unveiled Create My Widget, an Android feature that lets users build custom home-screen widgets by describing what they want in plain English. The tool will ship first on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones this summer, with Gemini doing the work of turning prompts into resizable dashboards. It is Google's clearest attempt yet to push generative AI past the chatbot surface and into the everyday Android shell.
The pitch is simple. A user asks for a widget — say, three high-protein meal-prep recipes a week, or a weather tile that only surfaces wind speed and rain — and the system assembles it on the home screen. The widget can be resized, repositioned, and updated on a recurring basis without the user touching code or an app store.
Gemini also reaches into Google's own apps to fill the widgets with personal data. A widget for a family reunion in Berlin can pull flight and hotel details, surface restaurant reservations, and add a countdown, drawing from Gmail and Calendar in the background. That is the part Google clearly wants to highlight: widgets that act less like static shortcuts and more like a standing query against the user's life.

Create My Widget arrived alongside Gemini Intelligence, a broader Android update that includes advanced autofill and an AI-powered voice dictation feature for Gboard. Taken together, the announcements describe an Android where Gemini is a system service rather than a separate app — invoked through the keyboard, the home screen, and the form-filling layer.
The Samsung Galaxy and Pixel launch window matters. Those two device families are where Google road-tests its premium AI features before broader Android rollout, and tying Create My Widget to flagship hardware gives Samsung a marketing angle for its own summer refresh cycle. It also limits the support surface while the feature settles in.
Widgets are a deliberate target. They are one of the few parts of a smartphone home screen that users still actively curate, and they have stagnated for years as a category — mostly weather, calendar, and music controls. A natural-language builder turns them into something closer to lightweight personal software, which is the kind of consumer-facing AI use case Google has struggled to demonstrate at scale against ChatGPT.
The competitive frame is Apple. iOS widgets remain locked to whatever developers ship, with no user-facing way to assemble new ones. If Create My Widget works as described, Android will offer a customization primitive that iPhone owners cannot replicate without third-party tools, and Google will have a concrete answer to the long-running argument that its AI investments have not produced distinctive consumer features.
Privacy will draw scrutiny. A widget that watches Gmail for flight confirmations and Calendar for reunion dates is, by construction, a standing read across a user's most sensitive inboxes. Google did not detail in the briefing how permissions are scoped per widget, how revocation works, or whether the data flows on-device or through Gemini in the cloud. Those answers will determine how widely the feature gets used outside of demo scenarios.
There is also an open question about the gap between the demo and the daily experience. Vibe-coded outputs across the industry have a habit of looking sharp in a launch reel and brittle in production, particularly when they depend on parsing email and calendar entries that were never written for a parser. Google is shipping into a market where users will notice a widget that gets a flight time wrong far faster than they notice one that gets it right.
For Google, the strategic prize is making Gemini the default way Android users instruct their phones to do something new. Widgets are a low-stakes wedge — they are visible, personal, and easy to throw away if they misbehave — and a successful rollout would give Google a template for pushing the same prompt-to-software pattern into launchers, settings, and accessibility tooling. The bet is that once users build one widget with words, they stop thinking of AI as a destination and start thinking of it as the way the operating system works.
