Google is rebranding its premium Android AI stack as Gemini Intelligence and tying it to a wave of features that let Gemini operate the phone on the user's behalf. The package, unveiled at the Android Show 2026 ahead of Google I/O 2026, expands task automation to more apps, adds a Gemini button inside Chrome on Android, and plugs Gemini into Android's autofill. Galaxy and Pixel phones will get the first wave this summer.
Ben Greenwood, Google's director of Android experiences, said Gemini Intelligence "brings the very best of Gemini to our most advanced Android devices." The framing matters: Google is explicitly gating the new features to premium hardware like the Galaxy S26 series rather than the broad Android base. Features will "roll out in waves as they become ready throughout this year," Greenwood said.
Task automation is the centerpiece. Gemini can already act inside a handful of rideshare and food delivery apps on recent Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones, but Google says that list will widen "soon" to a broader range of apps. The bigger shift is multimodality — until now, Gemini's automated actions were driven by voice or text prompts only.

With the update, users can hand Gemini a screenshot or photo as the input. The example Google offered: drop a screengrab of a grocery list from a notes app into Gemini and have it add the items to a delivery cart. It is the sort of capability that arguably should have shipped in version one, and it lands as agentic phone control becomes the contested frontier across Google, Apple, and Samsung.

A second Gemini Intelligence feature, Create My Widget, lets users describe a widget in natural language and have Gemini generate it. Google is calling this a first step toward "generative UI." Stated examples include a custom weather widget surfacing wind speed and precipitation for cyclists, and a recipe dashboard tuned to queries like three high-protein meal-prep recipes per week. The widgets carry over to Wear OS, so they appear on watches too.
Google is also porting desktop Chrome's Gemini features into the Android Chrome app. Users will see a Gemini button that can ingest the contents of a webpage and answer questions inside the browser. Subscribers to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra get auto browse, which completes tasks like booking appointments end-to-end. That feature begins rolling out in late June.
Autofill is the most personal of the new surfaces. Android users will be able to opt into connecting Gemini to autofill, at which point it can draw on the company's Personal Intelligence links to Google Photos and Gmail to populate forms. The pitch is that Gemini could, for instance, pull a license plate number from a photo to complete a vehicle registration field — utility and surveillance sitting in the same checkbox.
The strategy is consistent with what Google has been signaling for months: agentic features as the lever to defend Android's premium tier against Apple Intelligence and Samsung's Galaxy AI work, and as the reason to pay for AI Pro or AI Ultra. Gating Gemini Intelligence to flagship hardware also gives Samsung and Google's Pixel team a marketing line that mid-range Android phones cannot match.
The open questions are familiar. Multimodal task automation is genuinely hard — Google's own prior demos of Gemini taking actions inside apps have been slow and brittle. Hooking Gemini into autofill, Photos, and Gmail also widens the blast radius of any model error or prompt-injection attack, and Google has not detailed the guardrails it will apply when Gemini reads a webpage in Chrome and then acts on the contents.
For the AI market, Gemini Intelligence is Google's clearest move yet to convert model capability into platform lock-in on the device most people actually use. If task automation finally works across arbitrary apps, the value of an Android phone with a Google subscription rises meaningfully versus an iPhone without an equivalent agent. If it doesn't, Gemini Intelligence becomes another premium label competing for shelf space alongside Galaxy AI and whatever Apple ships next — and the real test arrives when these features hit Galaxy S26 and Pixel handsets this summer.
