Sogou
by Sogou, Inc. (subsidiary of Tencent; originally Sohu's search division)Sogou occupied an unusual position in the Chinese internet. Launched by Sohu in 2004, it became the country's second search engine behind Baidu — a distant second, but a real one — and it reached far more people through a product that was not search at all. Sogou Pinyin, its Chinese input method, became the dominant way hundreds of millions of people typed Chinese, and that gave the company something more valuable than search share: an enormous, continuously updated corpus of how Chinese is actually written.
That data underpinned the machine translation and speech recognition work Sogou invested in, and it is a large part of why Tencent wanted the company. Tencent had held a stake for years and acquired Sogou outright in 2021, folding its search and AI assets into its own ecosystem alongside WeChat.
As an independent product proposition Sogou is now largely of historical interest. Its search technology and input method continue inside Tencent's portfolio rather than as a company competing on its own terms, and Tencent's consumer AI energy has gone into Yuanbao, its assistant built on the Hunyuan model family and DeepSeek.
What makes the story worth knowing is the input method's role. Typing Chinese requires software mediation in a way that typing English does not, which handed whoever owned that layer a data advantage no Western equivalent has. Sogou's fate — absorbed for its data and its people rather than its market share — is a fairly clean illustration of how consolidation has worked in the Chinese internet.
