Stability AI acquired it in March 2023 and used it as a consumer surface for its generative models. Jasper acquired it from Stability in February 2024, folding it into a marketing platform. For a small utility product, three owners in three years is a lot of strategic direction to absorb.
The tools themselves are good. Background removal in particular is fast and clean enough for e-commerce work, and the API makes it viable to build into a product rather than using it by hand.
Pricing has a free tier with limits and watermarking on some outputs, with paid tiers for higher resolution, batch work and API volume. It suits e-commerce sellers, marketers and developers who need reliable single-purpose operations. Anyone wanting a full editor should look elsewhere; that was never the intent.
