Musk says Grok Bot cost too much to serve as users hit weekly limits

Elon Musk said the cost of serving Grok Bot, the always-on Grok agent product, was "unsustainably high relative to revenue." Musk made the comment on X on November 1 in reply to a user who asked whether Grok Bot usage could be reset, as subscribers reported running through their weekly usage limits unusually fast this week.

Musk gave no dollar figures, time period or cost breakdown. He did not say what changed, whether plan prices will change, whether affected users will get a reset, or that Grok Bot is being shut down.

Grok Bot is an agent that runs on its own cloud computer and handles background work such as research, writing and web browsing. It is bundled into flat subscriptions starting at $30 a month.

Key facts

  • 01Elon Musk said on X on November 1 that Grok Bot's serving cost was unsustainably high relative to revenue.
  • 02Grok Bot is bundled into flat subscriptions starting at $30 a month and runs tasks on its own cloud computer.
  • 03One user reported using 100% of the weekly Grok Bot allowance with four days left before the reset.
  • 04SpaceX said on its October 20 earnings call that Grok Bot had 800,000 paid weekly users.

That kind of background work uses far more computing than a single chat reply, and the weekly usage limits exist to meter it. One user reported hitting 100% of the weekly Grok Bot allowance with four days still left before the reset.

Musk's past-tense wording leaves open whether the tighter limits users saw this week were a deliberate cost-control change. Neither Musk nor the company has said so.

Grok Bot has scaled quickly. SpaceX said on its October 20, 2026 earnings call that the product had 800,000 paid weekly users, a figure it reached in about two months.

Grok has also kept adding features around it. Pages, Vault and video arrived in late October, alongside a referral program that gives friends a free two-week Premium trial, and hidden watermarks for Grok's developer tools are set to start in November.

No pricing change, revised usage cap or reset for affected subscribers has been announced. Musk's reply on X is so far the only explanation Grok Bot users have received.
