Notion is shutting down Notion Mail on September 22, 14 months after launching the Gmail client, and the reason is that most of its users have stopped opening the inbox entirely. The company said more than half of Notion Mail users now manage email through AI agents instead of the app itself, so it is retiring the product and routing everything through its agent layer. Users have until September 21 to export drafts and scheduled emails, and HIPAA-covered organizations have until June 30, 2026 to transition off.
Notion Mail launched in April 2025, built largely by engineers and executives who joined Notion through its February 2024 acquisition of Skiff, the encrypted email startup that had reached 2 million users before the deal. The Skiff-branded email service was wound down within a year of the acquisition, taking @skiff.com addresses with it. Notion Mail was the surviving artifact — a Gmail front end without end-to-end encryption, built on Skiff's infrastructure and team.
Now that artifact is going too. In a post on X, Notion framed the shutdown as a deliberate bet on agents over interfaces.

The pitch matters because it is one of the first times a venture-backed productivity company has publicly killed a shipping product on the grounds that its own AI agents have made the product redundant. Most agent stories so far have been about adding capability on top of existing apps. Notion is arguing that the app itself is the thing to subtract.
The mechanics of the wind-down are straightforward. Email history stays in Gmail because Notion Mail was a client, not a mail provider — Notion never held the underlying mailboxes. Users who set up auto-label rules in Notion Mail can convert them into a Custom Agent in a few clicks, and Notion says it will migrate the existing rules automatically. Anyone already running Notion agents against their email keeps that connection in place after the inbox app disappears.
Snippets and auto-label instructions can be exported for use in other clients, and Notion is directing users who want a traditional inbox back to Gmail or alternatives.

The HIPAA carve-out is the one place the timeline stretches. Notion's support page tells regulated customers to plan to transition off Notion Mail by June 30, 2026, a roughly nine-month grace period beyond the September 22 consumer shutdown. That gap reflects the compliance work involved in moving protected health data, not a change of heart about the product.
For Skiff watchers, the shutdown is the final chapter. The startup had been a credible challenger to Proton Mail before Notion bought it, with privacy as its core wedge. The Notion Mail successor stripped out the end-to-end encryption and became a Gmail layer, which made the product easier to ship but harder to differentiate. Killing it closes the loop on a $2 million-user product line that has now been fully absorbed into Notion's agent strategy and brand.
The skeptical read is that "more than half of users don't open the inbox" can mean two different things: either agents are genuinely doing the work, or the inbox app never gained enough mindshare to compete with Gmail's own interface and users defaulted back to Gmail. Notion did not break out absolute user numbers for Notion Mail, and without them it is hard to tell whether the agent-usage stat reflects product-market fit for agents or product-market miss for the client. The company is choosing to read it as the former.
What Notion is really testing is whether agents can replace a category of consumer software rather than merely augment it. If the bet works, the playbook — ship a thin client, watch agent usage climb, retire the client, keep the agents — becomes a template other productivity vendors will copy against calendars, file managers, and CRMs. If it doesn't, Notion will have spent two years and an acquisition to arrive back at a Gmail integration, which is roughly where Skiff's users ended up anyway.
