Anthropic's newly released Claude Fable 5, the company's most powerful publicly available model, refuses to answer high-school-level biology questions by design. Asked about mitochondria, cell membranes, prions, or how mRNA vaccines work, Fable declines and hands the query to the prior flagship, Claude Opus 4.8. The block is not a capability gap — Anthropic confirmed it is a deliberate safety filter aimed at bioweapons risk that catches nearly all biology queries in the process.
Fable 5 is the first model in Anthropic's Mythos class, a family the company previously said was too dangerous to release publicly because of its cybersecurity skills. The public version ships with guardrails across four declared risk areas: chemistry, biology, cybersecurity, and distillation, the technique Anthropic has accused DeepSeek of using on its models at industrial scale. Biology, on the evidence of testing by The Verge's Robert Hart, is by far the most aggressive filter.
Hart found Fable refused prompts including 'tell me about cell membranes,' 'what are mitochondria,' 'what is a prion,' and 'how mRNA vaccines work.' Ordinary medical questions fared no better: Fable declined to explain what causes hay fever, how asthma medicine works, how antibiotic resistance arises, and what Ebola is and how it spreads. A few prompts — 'what is cancer' and 'what is DNA' — slipped through. When Fable refused, Opus 4.8 generally answered without issue.

Anthropic spokesperson Paruul Maheshwary told The Verge the filter is intentional and calibrated wide on purpose. The company has long used classifiers to block bioweapons-related requests, but Fable 5's higher capability ceiling raised the stakes enough that Anthropic chose to overshoot.

The pattern outside biology is looser. Fable gave a basic overview of TNT while withholding synthesis steps, answered questions on chlorine gas as a chemical weapon, walked through common password threats, explained nuclear fusion and fission, and described how to secure an iPhone against hackers. The model still drew lines: it deferred to Opus on sarin gas, and both Fable and Opus refused 'how to make anthrax,' with Claude pausing the chat entirely.
The asymmetry is striking. A model that will discuss chlorine gas as a chemical weapon will not explain what a prion is. Anthropic's framing is that biology classifiers catch bioweapons-adjacent language at a rate it considers acceptable for launch, even though the false-positive rate sweeps in standard textbook material. The mitochondria refusal is the canonical example — a prompt with no plausible weapons application that the filter flags anyway.
Fable's behavior reflects a structural choice about who the public model is for. The company has signaled this is a temporary state. Anthropic said it intends to make Mythos-class models available without these safeguards to the broader biology and life sciences community so the capabilities can accelerate biomedical research and drug discovery. In other words: the censored Fable is the consumer SKU; researchers get the unrestricted version through a separate channel.

The biology block is the second public friction point for the Mythos rollout this month. Microsoft has restricted Claude Fable 5 for internal use over Anthropic's data retention terms, which we covered last week, and cybersecurity researchers have separately flagged Fable's tendency to refuse routine code reviews. Each issue has a different cause, but they share a theme: Anthropic is shipping a more capable model with a wider net of refusals than enterprise and consumer users expect.
Anthropic did not say whether restricted public releases paired with unrestricted research-only versions will become the standard pattern for future models. The economic logic points that way. If a model is genuinely capable enough to be useful in bioweapons research, the only commercially viable public release is a heavily filtered one, with the real product gated behind vetted access. That is the deployment shape Fable now describes.
The open question for Anthropic is whether customers will pay flagship prices for a model that punts to its predecessor on textbook biology. The company is betting they will, because Fable's wins on coding, cybersecurity, and broader reasoning matter more to most paying users than its biology coverage. That bet is defensible, but it does redefine what 'most powerful model' means in practice — powerful at the tasks Anthropic has cleared, deferential on the ones it has not. Expect the gap between public Fable and research Fable to widen, and expect competitors to use that gap as a selling point until Anthropic narrows its false-positive rate.
