Computer History reframes the desktop app from a chat window into a persistent observer. Instead of asking ChatGPT what a document said, users can ask what they were doing an hour ago, which files they touched, and which conversations followed. OpenAI positions the log as raw material for suggested automations and for resuming tasks the user abandoned mid-flow.
In a demo posted by Dominik Kundel of OpenAI's Developer Experiences team, the app looks up the last document Kundel edited, checks whether it was shared over Slack, and produces a recap of how he spent his morning. The workflow leans on Codex for anything that touches code and on ChatGPT for the narrative summary. Both models draw from the same event log.

The comparison to Microsoft's Windows Recall is unavoidable, and OpenAI is drawing the contrast deliberately. Recall relied on continuous screenshots of the user's screen, an approach that drew immediate criticism over local storage of sensitive content and forced Microsoft to delay and rework the rollout. Computer History captures no images, no video, and no audio — only structured events describing what the user did.

Combined with the opt-in default and per-app exclusion controls, the design reads as a direct response to the objections that stalled Recall.
The functional appeal is straightforward. An assistant that already sees the file you edited, the tab you closed, and the message you sent can skip the setup questions and act. It can also propose automations grounded in what the user actually does rather than what the user thinks to describe. For power users running Codex against large codebases, the ability to reference recent activity is a material productivity gain.
The privacy surface is still real. Even without screenshots, a structured log of every click and keystroke is a rich dataset — richer, in some analyses, because it is machine-readable rather than pixel-based. The log lives on the device, but any feature that hands application activity to a cloud model creates questions about retention, access, and downstream use for training. OpenAI has not yet detailed how long events are retained or whether they can be used to improve models.
Enterprise buyers will want answers before deployment. Admin controls, audit logs, and data-residency guarantees are table stakes for the corporate laptops that Codex and ChatGPT are increasingly running on. The consumer opt-in model does not translate cleanly to regulated industries where the choice to log keystrokes is not the individual employee's to make.
Computer History is the clearest signal yet that OpenAI wants ChatGPT to be an ambient operating-system layer rather than an app the user visits. Every major assistant vendor is converging on the same bet — that memory of what the user did yesterday is the differentiator that keeps them from being commoditized by whichever model wins the next benchmark. Microsoft got there first with Recall and paid for the misstep; OpenAI is trying to ship the same idea with the screenshots stripped out and the consent flow inverted, and the reception will decide whether ambient tracking becomes a standard assistant feature or the next Recall.
