Mistral

Mistral AI — the French frontier lab building open-weights and hosted models as the European answer to OpenAI and Anthropic.

By Mistral AI · Launched · Updated

Mistral AI is France's — and Europe's — flagship frontier AI company. Founded in April 2023 by researchers from Google DeepMind and Meta, Mistral has shipped a distinctive mix of open-weights and closed-frontier models, built Le Chat as the European answer to ChatGPT, and established itself as the default AI vendor for European enterprises and public sector buyers that prioritize data sovereignty.

This page is the living reference to Mistral — the company, the model family, pricing, what's new, and every story we publish tagged Mistral. We update it whenever Mistral ships a meaningful change.

As of April 2026, Mistral Large 3 is the flagship, with Le Chat Pro at €14.99/month as the consumer subscription.

Our review

We rated Mistral 4.3 / 5. The most open of the well-funded frontier labs: Mistral Large 3 and the whole Ministral 3 line ship under Apache 2.0, and Medium 3.5 under a modified MIT licence, so you can download, adapt and keep the weights. The chat product is credible rather than category-leading, but the combination of permissive licences, EU or US inference regions and $0.50/M-token flagship pricing is genuinely hard to match.

The Mistral bet

Mistral's strategic positioning rests on three pillars. Open-weights releases — Mistral 7B, Small, Nemo — build developer mindshare and commoditize the model layer. Closed frontier models — Mistral Large 3 — generate revenue through La Plateforme API and Le Chat subscriptions. European data sovereignty — EU-default residency, on-prem options, deep compliance engineering — creates a structural advantage with buyers who can't or won't send data to US-hosted services.

That mix has worked. Mistral is now one of a small number of frontier-capable labs outside the US-China duopoly, and the single most important European AI company by most measures.

The model family

Mistral ships across three size tiers. Mistral Small/Nemo are the open-weights workhorses — strong at common tasks, cheap to run, permissive licenses. Mistral Medium sits in the middle as the default La Plateforme model. Mistral Large 3 is the closed flagship, competitive with GPT-5 Mini and Claude Sonnet on benchmarks and priced below both.

Codestral is the coding specialist, optimized for code completion and repo understanding. Released under a research license rather than Apache 2.0, it's part of Mistral's move toward product-specific models rather than one-size-fits-all generalists.

Le Chat and the consumer push

Le Chat is Mistral's consumer product — a ChatGPT-style chatbot at chat.mistral.ai. The free tier is competitive with the free tiers of ChatGPT and Gemini. Pro at €14.99/month (notably, priced below the $20/€20 of ChatGPT Plus and Gemini Advanced) unlocks Mistral Large 3 plus higher usage limits.

Consumer AI is a hard market — distribution, brand, and habit all favor incumbents — and Le Chat's share in 2026 is still small next to ChatGPT. But it's growing, especially in France and other European markets where "the European AI" positioning resonates with both consumers and regulators.

Enterprise and public sector

Mistral's real business is enterprise and public sector. French and European government agencies, defense, healthcare, finance, and large industrials are adopting Mistral specifically because the data stays in Europe, the compliance posture is tailored to EU regulations (GDPR, the AI Act), and on-prem deployment is available for the most sensitive workloads. This is a market that US frontier labs cannot fully serve without structural concessions that neither OpenAI nor Anthropic has so far been willing to make.

Where Mistral wins — and where it doesn't

Mistral wins on European data sovereignty, mixed-model strategy (open for developers, closed for revenue), and price-to-capability ratio in its hosted models. It's the right default for EU enterprises and the clearest credible European frontier alternative.

It trails the absolute frontier on capability — Mistral Large 3 is near-frontier, not frontier. It trails OpenAI and Anthropic on ecosystem depth (fewer third-party integrations, less tooling polish). And the Microsoft partnership, while commercially valuable, complicates the "European sovereignty" pitch for the most sovereignty-sensitive buyers.

Frequently asked questions

Who founded Mistral?
Arthur Mensch (CEO), Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix founded Mistral in April 2023. Mensch and Lample came from Google DeepMind and Meta AI Research — they led Llama work at Meta before leaving to start Mistral.
Why does Mistral matter?
Three reasons. One: it's Europe's flagship frontier AI lab, the clearest example of a credible frontier-training operation outside the US-China duopoly. Two: its mix of open-weights and closed models has pushed the industry debate about openness. Three: its data-residency and sovereignty story has made it the default choice for EU enterprises and public sector AI.
Are Mistral models open source?
Some are, some aren't. Mistral 7B, Mistral Small/Nemo, and early Codestral releases are under Apache 2.0 or similar open licenses. Mistral Large and Large 3 (the flagship models) are closed and hosted via La Plateforme. This mixed strategy is how Mistral balances capability commoditization with business model.
What is Le Chat?
Le Chat is Mistral's consumer chatbot at chat.mistral.ai. The free tier uses Mistral's mid-size models; the €14.99/month Pro tier uses Mistral Large 3. It's the European answer to ChatGPT, with stronger data-residency and privacy positioning.
How does Mistral compare to OpenAI?
Mistral's flagship models trail GPT-5 on benchmarks but are competitive with mid-tier closed models at lower price points. The real differentiation is data sovereignty — Mistral's EU residency, its deep enterprise compliance posture, and its willingness to ship on-prem make it a different category of option for European organizations.
Can I self-host Mistral?
Yes. Open-weights releases (Mistral 7B, Small, Nemo) can be run on your own infrastructure. Enterprise customers can also negotiate on-prem deployment of the closed flagship models, though this is a custom-contract path rather than a self-serve download.
What's Mistral's relationship with Microsoft?
Microsoft made a strategic investment in Mistral in early 2024 and distributes Mistral models on Azure AI. The partnership was somewhat controversial in European policy circles (concerns about European AI sovereignty even as Mistral aligned with a US hyperscaler), but has been important for Mistral's commercial distribution.
Is Mistral profitable?
Mistral hasn't disclosed profitability. Like OpenAI and Anthropic, it's a growth-stage frontier lab with significant training and inference costs. Reported revenue growth has been strong through 2025 into 2026, driven largely by enterprise and European public-sector adoption.
