Amazon MGM drops Luca Guadagnino's Sam Altman film Artificial

Amazon MGM has dropped Artificial, the Luca Guadagnino-directed feature about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, after about a year in development. The film dramatizes the five days in 2023 when Altman was fired and then reinstated as CEO, one of the most consequential leadership episodes in AI's commercial history. The studio said in a statement to Deadline that the project "will be better served if it were released by a different studio and is working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home."

Andrew Garfield stars as Altman. Monica Barbaro, fresh off A Complete Unknown, plays former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati. Ike Barinholtz plays Elon Musk, and Anora's Yura Borisov plays OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. The casting alone signaled a prestige play: three of the four leads are coming off major awards-circuit titles.

The timing is conspicuous. Amazon announced a $50 billion investment in OpenAI in February, one of the largest single commitments to an AI lab on record. A studio owned by Amazon releasing a dramatization of OpenAI's internal crisis — with Altman, Murati, Sutskever, and Musk all portrayed by name — sits awkwardly next to a $50 billion commercial relationship with the company being depicted.

Key facts

  • 01Amazon MGM has dropped Artificial, Luca Guadagnino's film about Sam Altman, after about a year in development.
  • 02The film dramatizes the five days in 2023 when Altman was fired and reinstated as OpenAI CEO.
  • 03Andrew Garfield plays Altman, with Monica Barbaro as Mira Murati, Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, and Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever.
  • 04Amazon announced a $50 billion investment in OpenAI in February, deepening commercial ties between the two companies.
  • 05The studio said the film would be 'better served' by a different distributor and is helping find a new home.

Amazon MGM has not publicly tied the decision to the OpenAI investment, and the studio's statement frames the move as a fit issue rather than a conflict. Puck first reported the decision not to release the film. Neither Guadagnino's team nor OpenAI has commented on whether either side raised objections to the script or the portrayal of named executives.

The five-day stretch the film covers remains the defining governance episode in modern AI. In November 2023, OpenAI's board removed Altman, triggering a near-total staff revolt, an offer from Microsoft to hire Altman and the departing team, and Altman's reinstatement within the week. Sutskever, who initially backed the board, later said he regretted his role. Murati served as interim CEO during the interval before stepping back into her CTO role and eventually departing to start her own lab.

For Guadagnino, the project is a sharp pivot from the auteur dramas that built his reputation. The film has been in development for roughly a year, which suggests the script and principal photography are far enough along that the studio is shopping a finished or near-finished asset rather than killing it outright. Films pulled this late typically find a home — A24, Neon, and Searchlight have all picked up orphaned prestige titles in similar situations — though terms tend to favor the new distributor.

What makes Artificial commercially unusual is that its subjects are still running the companies the film depicts. Altman remains CEO of OpenAI, which is now valued in the hundreds of billions and is Amazon's largest AI partner. Musk runs xAI, an OpenAI competitor, and is in active litigation with OpenAI. Any distributor taking on the film inherits the legal and relational exposure that Amazon MGM appears to have decided it does not want.

Skeptics of the studio's framing will note that "better served by a different studio" is the standard language used when a distributor wants to exit a project without commenting on the underlying reason. Whether the trigger was the OpenAI investment, concerns from named subjects, test-screening reception, or simple release-calendar math, Amazon MGM is not saying. The filmmaking team has not publicly responded.

The episode underscores how tightly the AI industry's commercial relationships now constrain adjacent media. Amazon's $50 billion OpenAI investment is the kind of deal that reshapes a studio's editorial calculus, whether or not anyone in the room says so out loud. As more of the entertainment industry's parent companies take direct stakes in frontier AI labs — Microsoft in OpenAI, Amazon in OpenAI and Anthropic, Google in Anthropic — the set of stories those studios can comfortably tell about AI is going to keep narrowing. Artificial will likely find a distributor. The more interesting question is which AI stories never get greenlit in the first place.
