Etsy launched a native app inside ChatGPT on Tuesday, opening its catalog of over 100 million listings to shoppers who would rather describe a gift than scroll filters. The beta lets users tag @Etsy mid-prompt — for example, "Help me find a Mother's Day gift under $100 for my mom who loves gardening" — and surfaces listings that link back to Etsy to complete the purchase. The launch arrives a week after Etsy posted $631 million in Q1 2026 revenue and its first uptick in active buyers in two years, to 86.6 million.

It is also Etsy's second attempt at a ChatGPT presence in eight months. The company was an early partner in OpenAI's Instant Checkout integration in September, which let buyers complete orders without leaving the chat window. That arrangement ended in March, and reporting indicated Etsy did not see meaningful sales volume from the embedded checkout flow.

The new app reverses the architecture. Instead of routing transactions through ChatGPT, Etsy is using the chatbot as a discovery surface and pulling shoppers back to its own marketplace to convert. That gives Etsy control over the buyer relationship, the cart, and — critically — the data, while still tapping ChatGPT's user base for top-of-funnel traffic.

Key facts

  • 01Etsy launched a native app inside ChatGPT on Tuesday, opening its 100 million-plus listings to natural-language search.
  • 02The launch follows the March wind-down of Etsy's Instant Checkout integration with OpenAI, which began in September.
  • 03Etsy reported $631 million in Q1 2026 revenue with marketplace GMS up 6% year over year.
  • 04Active buyers rose to 86.6 million, the first increase in two years; the platform has 5.6 million active sellers.
  • 05Etsy joins Angi, SeatGeek, Tubi, and Wix among brands building native apps inside ChatGPT since OpenAI opened the door in October.

Etsy is simultaneously testing its own conversational search inside its core app, pitched as a gift assistant that asks follow-up questions and narrows preferences before recommending products. The feature sits alongside an AI-powered discovery experience with curated collections and a suite of seller tools that auto-generate product titles, descriptions, and buyer messages.

Etsy is taking a second swing at ChatGPT after its Instant Checkout integration ended in March, this time exposing all 100 million listings through a native app rather than a checkout bolt-on.

On the supply side, Etsy is leaning into AI tooling for its 5.6 million active sellers while trying to keep the marketplace from drowning in synthetic goods. In 2024 the company introduced a "Designed" label to flag AI-generated artwork, an early acknowledgment that the same generative tools helping sellers list faster could erode the handmade premise that distinguishes Etsy from Amazon.

The Q1 2026 numbers help explain the urgency. Revenue of $631 million beat expectations and marketplace gross merchandise sales rose 6% year over year, but the active-buyer line had been flat for two years before this quarter's bump to 86.6 million. Etsy needs new acquisition channels, and conversational shopping inside ChatGPT is among the cheapest it can plausibly tap.

The strategic context is a portfolio cleanup. In February, Etsy agreed to sell Depop to eBay for $1.2 billion in cash, narrowing its focus to the core handmade and vintage marketplace. The ChatGPT app is consistent with that focus — funnel more buyers into the main Etsy storefront rather than spread engineering across secondary properties.

Etsy is not alone inside ChatGPT. Angi, SeatGeek, Tubi, and Wix have all shipped native apps since OpenAI opened the developer surface in October, turning the chatbot into something closer to a platform than a product. For OpenAI, third-party apps are a way to make ChatGPT useful for transactions it cannot fulfill itself; for the partners, they are a hedge against Google's grip on shopping search.

The skeptical read is that the Instant Checkout failure was a demand problem, not a packaging problem. Shoppers using ChatGPT for research are not necessarily ready to buy, and the pool of users willing to complete a purchase inside a chat window — versus pasting a product into a new tab — may simply be small. Etsy's pivot from in-chat checkout to in-chat discovery suggests it has reached the same conclusion.

For Etsy, the real test is whether ChatGPT-originated traffic converts at rates that justify the engineering investment, and whether the buyers it attracts are incremental rather than cannibalized from existing search and email channels. For OpenAI, every brand-name app reinforces the pitch that ChatGPT is the place commerce will happen — even if, this time, the merchant is keeping the checkout for itself.
