The enterprise AI shift: who's actually buying

Real reporting on what enterprises are actually paying for in AI — the contracts, the pilots that worked, the ones that didn't, and how the buying pattern is changing.

Enterprise AI buying is the single biggest revenue lever for the AI labs and the single biggest unknown for most enterprise leaders. Most coverage is vendor-driven hype; this file collects the stories where we have real reporting on what enterprises are actually paying for, what's working, what's been quietly cancelled, and how the buying pattern is shifting.

Series questions

Are enterprises actually getting ROI from AI?
Mixed picture. Coding assistants (Copilot, Cursor) and meeting intelligence (Otter, Fireflies) show clear productivity ROI in measured pilots. Customer-service and content generation use cases show meaningful results in some companies and disappointing ones in others — implementation quality and use-case selection matter enormously.
Which AI vendor is winning enterprise?
OpenAI leads on ChatGPT adoption inside companies. Microsoft Copilot leads on bundled enterprise distribution. Anthropic leads on enterprise API adoption among AI-native teams. The market is large enough that all three are growing fast.
How do enterprise AI contracts work?
Most enterprise AI is sold as a per-user subscription with usage tiers (basic seat + premium seat for power users), volume discounts, and additional fees for fine-tuning, dedicated capacity, or compliance certifications. Three-year terms are standard at the top of the market.
